Up until June 1993, the world as we know it happened exactly the same. Bill Clinton is in office, the US was recently involved in the Gulf War in the middle east, and the internet has over 50 servers connected most commonly via dial up.
However in Muldraugh and West Point, a foul smell in the air could be noticed by residents in the later months of June. By July 2nd, many people suddenly start to fall violently ill, and show symptoms of the Knox Infection. The origin is not clear, but it's implied to be sourced by misfolded prions in the burger meat at Spiffo's. On July 4th, on the United State's Independence day, many people start to succumb to this infection, and rise in great numbers, quickly overwhelming the population.
On July 6th, the National Guard is activated and an **exclusion zone** is set up around Muldraugh and West Point, along with a complete communications blackout. The government portrayed the outbreak to be flu-like, causing panic and confusion among the infected, and on July 11th the WHO grounded all non-military or medical international flights, which lead to mass panic throughout the nation causing riots and a disgruntled response from the President. As photos are leaked, and information is gathered, we learn the following:
* The disease is airborn, and most people are not immune (all players are immune)
* Those infected will suffer influenza-like symptoms for up to three days after contracting the illness, and eventually succumb - after which they will then reanimate within an hour after death.
* The risen dead are dead, the only way to deaminate their bodies is to destroy the brain
* They appear to be able to move without working muscles or blood flow, however at a shamble. Breaking their bones seems to slow them down.
* The disease can also be spread via saliva, aka a bite, which no one is immune
On July 14th, the exclusion zone is overran by the undead, spreading to Louisville, forcing the government to destroy the bridges crossing the Ohio River in an attempt to contain the outbreak. As of the 17th, the infection has spread outside of Kentucky into surrounding states, and cases are being reported across the world as well. As of the 18th, the infection has been confirmed in all parts of the world, and after a final broadcast the world goes quiet...
On July 9th, as the infection runs rampant in Knox County, a group of Rosewood Prisoners escape and found a group called the Coyotes. For the next few months, they would terrorize the survivors in and around Rosewood and later Muldraugh. They were known to kidnap people and kill them after sawing off their arms. In August, they were finally taken out by a mercenary group that is yet to be identified.
Another camp that formed in early July was Camp David, who took in and helped as many people as they could. They've set up a radio station and make broadcasts to help those in need. Finally, a group of PMCs calling themselves Vulpes have also formed and have begun taking contracts as early as September.
In October, a radio broadcast from people identifying as the government made contact with Camp David, and requested the town of Muldraugh be cleared out so they can arrive and start rescuing folk and begin the process to research a cure. However, a friendly fire incident between Camp David and Vulpes rendered that mission incomplete, as the two factions began and ended a war within the week, skyrocketing tensions in the region for anyone that associates with these two groups.
Things never really calmed down, and lives were lost in minor engagements for the next few months. Then, the military sent out a broadcast: all survivors were to make their way to Louisville for extraction at the bridge. Vulpes, and only two surviving members of Camp David, made their way over. They successful snuck past the hoards and made it to the bridge... but as they did, the Vuples turned on the last 2 surviving members, and shot them down. Their last words as the military took out the aggressors?
"Coyotes forever."
In the first days of the apocalypse, many factions would rise and fall; from your small group of plucky survivors, to your hardcore kill-on-sight preppers. Bases would be built, but few would last against the onslaught of the undead.
One group that would make it to the end, was Frankfort. Their base would initially be built by forgotten survivors, taken over by the Barons, whom all killed each other and were replaced by the group naming themselves after their founding member, Frank.
Frankfort was not free of sin, as a group of mostly children they did what they had to to survive, and protect each other. Many factions, such as Daisy Top, would begin hostilities with Frankfort, but would be quickly wiped out once they proved to be a threat.
The blood on their hands was a struggle for them, as their overall mental stability would find it difficult to survive the traumas they were enduring. But, when all seemed lost, they were finally able to make contact with the remnants of the US government, and organize a rescue.
As the survivors of the Knox Infection are rescued from the top of the Orio Office Place, they are taken to the Virgin Islands. There, under martial law, they are held under quarantine, and separated from one another. For days, then weeks, then months, they are held and experimented upon, at first gently, then cruely. There would be multiple escape attempts, but thankfully no one would lose their life, although some would try to take it themselves.
After what seems like forever, they are finally released and reunited with each other. The islands were about what they were expecting, similar to life before the infection, although with constant armed guards. The suffering the crew of Frankfort and other survivors would go through would not be in vain, as a vaccine would be found. While it wouldn't ever immunize people against a bite, the airborn infection would become a worry of the past, and after decades the final zombie would perish, allowing humans to rebuild and take back their world.
The atrocities of the government during the first weeks would become saved and documented, in fact they would learn it was the cause of their release from their initial captivity. A schism broke out in the inner ranks of the leftovers of the government, with those seeking justice winning in the end. Those rescued from Knox would be cared for with priority; they would rarely go hungry, received free medical care (such as therapy or reconstructive surgery), and become celebrities of the new world, whether they liked it or not.
It would take generations for humanity to retake what they had lost, and centuries for the population to return to levels similar before this great tragedy, but those that survived the source of the infection that nearly took the world would never be forgotten, immortalized as a symbol of humanity's strength.
The end.
The first days were chaotic. While the military tried their best to hold the exclusion zone, they were quickly overwhelmed within a week, the following month would see the rest of the world fall. Those who tried escaping Knox County were shot at, some perishing.
Inside the exclusion zone, multiple groups of survivors banded together. Camp Kelly near Riverside, the Minute Men near Rosewood, Jamieton near Wilbore, The Holy Order of Saint Sebastian in Muldraugh who later moved to Indiana, the Cult of New Salem in Bradenburg, Gold Green Acres in Rabbit Hash, Candlelight in Raven Creek, and a couple forts in West Point that fell within the weeks.
True to human nature, these groups begun fighting before the undead had even made it out of Knox County. First New Salem covertly bombed Jamiton and the Holy Order, for not following their way. While pacifist in nature, they were vandals through fire to spread their word. People quickly began to blame each other, namely Camp Kelly, for the attacks, and New Salem went quiet, patiently waiting for the ideal time to return once the ash had settled.
Camp Kelly denied these accusations, and barely were able to keep the peace, but this caused internal divisions within the group. As the Holy Order moved to Indiana, they allied and brought the Minutemen with them, many of whom did not survive the journey and some ended up scattering to other factions, while their founder George returned to their homestead near Rosewood to try and rebuild with who was left.
In only a month into the apocalypse, Camp Kelly finally had schism, with John and former minuteman Kurt attempting to take over the faction from their underage leader, Doug. The coup failed, when one man (Alex) was able to break free from his cuffs, and gun the two down. While this emotionally scarred the rest of the camp, now mostly dominated by children, the Holy Order, containing many who were close to Kurt, began to worry about the fate of their friend.
They soon discovered the truth after an investigation, and held a meeting with Doug regarding the violence. Emotions were high, and it erupted into a gunfight, with Doug barely escaping with his life. The Holy Order placed roadblocks on the bridge leading into Indiana, and prepared for war, while Camp Kelly did the same, gathering allies to have a hope at surviving such a large and growing force over the river. Jamiton announced they would remain a neutral ground, and a safe haven for the women and children of Camp Kelly, as well as any solos in the Riverside area wanting to avoid the oncoming conflict.
Jamieton offered to host peace talks for the two, soon to be warring, factions. However, the peace-talks were a trap! The Order, allied with Candlelight, assaulted the fort and killed as many as they could. Those that escaped remained in hiding to avoid the oppressive clutches of these two factions. Doug, only 17, was captured by the Holy Order, and after a failed escape attempt, his legs were severed and he was burned alive, his ashes tossed into the Ohio River. Miles, Doug's closest friend, was given to Candlelight where he was fed Doug's legs, and humiliated as a slave to these cannibals.
However, Miles was able to escape, and was rescued by Gold & Green Acres. Only 16, the teen shared his experiences with the quiet faction, and they became radicalized to defend, or avenge, the children. Over the next few months, they would slowly gather the remains of Camp Kelly and Jamieton, giving them a safe haven, or supplies to continue lying low. This union of survivors all opted to build small bases throughout the County, instead of clumping together to give their enemies a single target to attack. This Guerilla style of survival would be effective in surviving not just the undead monsters, but the living ones as well.
Weeks of fighting ruptured out across Meade and Eerie Counties. The Order hunted down the survivors of Camp Kelly in vein, while Candlelight employed guerilla tactics against Jamieton's new base. Many people died on all sides, leaving Jamieton jaded and cautious. Candlelight was eventually reduced to a single man, named Azure, who was able to ambush and kill many members of Jamieton, who even tried placing bounties to remove this one man army.
Finally, on their third attempt to broker peace, Jamieton's leader, Bill, made a secret deal with Azure to finally end the war, under the condition that no one enter Raven Creek. G&G Acres would become a shadow of itself, with most of their members joining the reforming Jamieton. The Holy Order, on the other hand, focused on taking over Indiana, giving up on their search for Alex. Eventually an internal schism would occur, with Fort Castle Haven taking most of their Kentucky territory, and absorbing the remaining members of the Minutemen.
Unfortunately for those trying so desperately to survive, November did not bring any peace to the citizens of Meade County. Without Candlelight harassing Jamieton, the rebuilding faction would soon find itself at odds with Archiwood, the renamed Baazar. Archibald, the leader, claimed Orchidwood as his own, and warned any who entered his territory to leave, lest he open fire. This lead to a misunderstanding with Jamiton, who believed someone to be kidnapped by the 1%er, and retaliated in secret with a scouting op, ending with the theft of some items.
Using deduction, Archiwood hired mercenaries to investigate Jamieton, however it went south when two members, the new Devi and the 14 year old Delilah, were shot up by this mercenary. In a desperate attempt to save Del's life, The Duke, previous leader of Gold and Green Acres, discovered Azure's survival and reached out to him for help, given his medical skills. Azure reluctantly agreed, and arrived to save the poor child. However upon spotting Azure, Bill gunned the man down, both due to his previous crimes and to save his own skin from a lie now exposed.
Internal strife occurred, followed by a trial. Bill was found guilty of murder and deceit, and his execution was reduced to banishment, which was reduced again to being removed as leader. Unfortunately, the constant conflict, internal struggles, and hostilities began driving away many survivors from Jamieton, who went off in the middle of the night on Thanksgiving Day to form their own groups to try and survive in peace, dubbing themselves as The Nomads.
The path for the Nomads was a harsh one. Multiple were wounded on the path to their new home, losing limbs to bites. They escaped the threat of the living, and replaced it with the dead. But, overtime, they made things work, and soon more and more abandoned Jamieton to join the Nomads, including Bill their leader. The remainders of Jamieton became the Vitas, and G&G was officially absorbed by the Nomads, giving up on their home which was burned down by Candlelight months prior. A courier faction also appeared, the Bluegrass Express; its goal to keep people connected in a world with no phone or internet.
As Christmas rolled around, those surrounding Knox County were able to experience peace for the first time in nearly 7 months. As new years rolls around, an aura of hope surrounds the survivors of his horrible pandemic...
New Years came around with no conflict. But as the first month of 1994 continued, developments occurred between the factions that splintered off from Jamieton. The Nomads and Vitas began a conflict sparked over claim of the leftover supplies at the old motel Jamieton was based at. Across the river in Harrison County, Indiana, the Holy Order opened its borders, and opened a bar along the River. Here the rising tensions between the Nomads and Vitas were quelled, not with fighting but with diplomacy.
Eventually, New Jamiton was burned down in the drunken rage of one of it's former members, and the county continued its shaky peace. Emissaries from the various factions would visit each other, eventually forming the newly made Byzantine Empire, a union between the Vitas, Holy Order, and Bluegrass Express. With external fighting complete, internal fighting resumed as stressors within the groups continued to boil. Life continued this way until multiple broadcasts from the US Government rang out on the radio. Airdrops appeared over the region, and a group claiming to be FEMA attempted to lay claim to them.
Will these new groups be able to continue another month without conflict? Will everyone make it through the winter alive? Only time will tell, as our survivors adapt to the uncertainty of this new world...
As February came and went, so did the peace the region was barely holding on to. Alex, killer of Kurt, had returned to the region after nearly half a year. Public radio channels stirred to life, and the Holy Order were still seeking vengeance for their friend. Bill, former leader of Jamieton, informed all on these channels what had happened to Doug, creating internal unrest within the ranks of the Byzantine Empire, but also putting a target on the Nomads who wanted to stay out of the conflict.
Eventually, two members of The Holy Order finally found Nomad's Rest on complete accident while en-route to Louisville. While initially met with suspicion and aggression, the faction decided it was best to give them a warm meal and bed for the night, and sew the seeds of peace and kindness. Taking an emissary with them back to Antioch, this olive branch might finally be what Aimo, leader of the Byzantine Empire, needed to finally bury the hatchet.
However, a hidden radio broadcasted the peace talk to the entire county, which ended with Aimo apparently executing the emissary from the Nomads, and the two from his own faction citing fears of brainwashing. The nomads abandoned their home and fled before an attack could be made, and Aimo began to truly show his insanity as he began "cleansing" his faction sparking a witchunt based in his paranoid hatred of the federal government.
Bloodshed would take the county as many innocents were killed. Many members of Vitae left, some joining Oasis far away from the bloodshed, while FEMA worked tirelessly with defectors from the Holy Order to finally bring the Byzantine Empire to its knees. A few days after the month closed, Aimo was finally gunned down by his own, hopefully closing this bloody chapter in the new world.
